Cut Down Your Energy Usage | Matthews AC
It’s no secret that our energy bills tend to skyrocket in extreme seasons such as winter & summer. However, you don’t have to accept it – you can take the necessary steps to help prevent this increase. After all, doesn’t everyone want to save money where they can? The following tips from our Matthews AC company will cut back on your energy usage this winter so you can save money – even during the cold weather here in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Adjust Your Thermostat
This is a hard tip for many people to follow because reducing the temperature in your home is the opposite of what you will be wanting to do – but trust us on this one. Reducing the temperature in your home by one or two degrees can save you a great deal of money on your energy bills. If you normally keep your thermostat at 72, try it at 70. Yes, it will feel cooler in your home but you can throw on a jacket or sweatpants to make up for it. Once you see that this will save you money, you won’t mind having to wear a jacket or pants to keep warm.
Reverse Your Fans
This tip is often overlooked by many people because typically when we think about fans, we think about the summer and wanting to cool off. However, if you reverse your fans, this can draw the cold air up to the ceiling and move the warm air down into your living area. Your room will feel more comfortable and less stuffy and you will be able to use your central heating system a little bit less than usual.
Use Natural Sunlight
You should open your curtains and your blind during the day when the sun is the brightest. This allows sunlight into your home which can help raise the temperature by a couple of degrees without ever having to use your heating system. At night, close your curtains and blinds – this helps to retain the heat that was absorbed during the day and will also help to keep the cold air out.
Use Appliances at Night
Finally, use your major appliances at night when it’s the coldest. Wait to wash and dry your clothes when it gets dark. Your dryer will naturally heat up your space without having to crank up the thermostat. When you’re cooking dinner, use your oven. When you’re done cooking, turn your oven off and open the door – this will let that heat escape acting as a space heater.
